High-tech glass company Corning is bullish on growth from mobile consumer electronics and life sciences businesses in India, a senior company official said on Thursday.
The automotive and optical fibre business is the biggest revenue contributor to the company in the country, at present.
Corning which started business by providing glass cover for bulb invented by Thomas Alva Edison has expanded into several verticals to provide glass technology ranging from electronics display protection cover for mobile, television displays, semiconductor manufacturing, space telescopes to glass based packaging for labs, vaccines etc.
"We waited for ecosystem to be established in India where we are seeing now global players are already establishing footprints to manufacture smartphones, and we just want to be a part of the supply chain. Reliance Industries Ltd, India's most valuable company, plans to commission its first solar giga-factory this year as part of a pivot towards green energy, its chairman Mukesh Ambani said on Thursday.
The solar giga factory will include the manufacturing of PV modules, cells, wafers and ingots, polysilicon, and glass at a single location. The modules convert sunlight into electricity.
Addressing the annual shareholders meeting, he said the first train of 20GW solar PV (photovoltaic) manufacturing "will commence production" by the end of this year.
It is also targeting industrialising sodium-ion cell production at the MW level in 2025 and the first 50 MWh a year lithium battery cells pilot in 2026.
Reliance, in 2021, announced plans to invest USD 10 billion over three years to develop a new fuels business based on 100 GW of renewable power capacity by 2030.

Godfrey Phillips India has scheduled its Annual General Meeting on September 6, 2024, in which it has put five ordinary resolutions and one special resolution for approval from its shareholders.
As Bina Modi's remuneration exceeds the limits of Rs 5 crore or 2.5 per cent of the net profits of the company, Godfrey Phillips requires a special resolution, which has to be passed from a super majority of 75 per cent of the total votes polled.
Opposing the special resolution, Glass Lewis observed there are "no defined performance conditions for the payment of commission" to Bina Modi and her "appointment is as combined chairman and managing director".
